Artist's Comments

A tighter shot of a wood processing plant (possibly a pulp mill) near Eureka, CA. Beautiful at dusk, but it still stinks.

Nicely shot.

It is a pulp mill. They've gotten a lot better, environmentally, over the years, but still nowhere near responsible. Apparently, before I moved up here, there was huge tanks of Chlorine for the bleaching process that have since been removed. From what I hear the plant used to make it near-impossible to walk down broadway without retching, the smell was so bad.

I go out to Samoa to shoot the night sky occasionally. I have tried to shoot the mill with color film but it didn't turn out well, probably because the only thing I had with me was iso400.
One of my good buds runs night security out there, so I only get hassled occasionally.

Heh, interesting. Thinking about the industry that's been around here over the years, I don't really wanna know what's in the drinking water... *twitch*

Neither...Do...I...
Have you heard about the bay-dredging?

No... Although it doesn't surprise me that they want to move silt out of the bay. I gather there's a lot of nasty stuff in the silt and they have to come up with abatement plans before they dredge, since dredging will kick up anything being held in the sediment... I imagine they have done environmental studies and it looks really bad?

Also, in looking at Google sat photos, it appears there were a whole lot of buildings connected with the Navy base, perhaps, that are now in what is the actual bay itself. I'm wondering if there is going to be any archaeological study of that before they just dig it up and toss it. I've even considered modifying a pair of snowshoes so I can walk on the mud in the bay at low tide without sinking, and to go exploring. :D

Sounds like fun. I've often thought about how to give myself more surface area to muck around in the mud with. I don't know an awful lot about the navy base, except that we have a decommissioned submarine base south of Ferndale.

About the dredging: Actually, up until after this year, the dredging spoils have been just pumped out onto Samoa Beach. They run a hose from the dredge to the water and just spray all that muck out onto the waveslope. Messy. Historically, this has happened every seven or so years. Next time, dredging spoils will have to be barged out to an approved offshore dumpsite.

Interesting. Good shot too. Love the lights at night like that.

-= Dude did you dip your car in glue and roll it through E-Bay? =-

It was one of those "I hope it'll look nice, there's enough light in the sky to make it interesting if I can capture the light properly," and I managed to get the technical details right to end up with worthwhile results. :)
